BURR RIDGE, IL – Burr Ridge has one of the worst-rated bridges in the state's highway system, something the state plans to do something about, the village said Friday.

The Interstate 55 bridge over Madison Street was built in 1959 and carries more than 142,000 vehicles a day, according to a Burr Ridge news release.

Starting Wednesday and lasting until mid-June, the state plans to undertake a project to improve the bridge. That means southbound Madison traffic under the bridge will remain closed during the project, the village said. Northbound traffic is expected to continue as usual.

Southbound traffic will be guided to a detour along Plainfield Road, Route 83 and South Frontage Road, according to the news release.

The village said exposed reinforcing steel and corroded bridge piers are obvious from underneath. Design of the bridge started in early 2020 and repairs atop I-55 were completed in 2021, but bridge pier patching has been delayed since last year, the village said.
