Female Reader's question: I have a slight burning sensation when I urinate, but I've been to the doctor, who says I don't have an infection. All my
tests have come back negative, and I'm not sure what else to try. Any
advice?

Dr. Karen Deighan: I would make sure that there is not a vaginal or vulvar infection that is being aggravated by urination. This can be investigated by an exam with a Gynecologist. It is also possible that a new product (soap, detergent, etc) could have cause an irritation and I would investigate that possibility.

There is a condition called Interstitial Cystitis that is often confused with a urinary tract infection. This is usually a "diagnosis of exclusion" which means all other tests are negative. There are a variety of treatment options for this, that include medication, physical therapy and dietary modification.
