Whiz Kids of 2011

A look back at students who excelled both in and out of the classroom this year.

School                Year     Key to Awesomeness   Hinsdale Central Senior Anlauf has played football and basketball all four years at Hinsdale Central. He also participates in National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, Teachers in Need, and freshman orientation. Hinsdale Central Senior Boling was a varsity golf player for his last three years at Central. He placed sixth individually at the state championship in October (the Red Devils placed fourth). Boling also plays piano, drums, and guitar, and has been a member of the Science Olympiad since his junior year.
Hinsdale Central Senior Buddig is Hinsdale Central's student body president for the 2011-2012 school year after being a Student Council senator for three years. He also participates in clubs such as J. Kyle Braid, Breaking Down the Walls, Teachers in Need, and the Conflict Resolution team. Hinsdale South Junior Carr has participated in South's Drama Club since her freshman year, and is currently one of two co-presidents of the club (she and her fellow co-president are the first juniors to hold the position). Among her many other activities, Carr is also a member of Madrigals and the orchestra (she plays violin), and she hopes to study music education in college. Hinsdale Central Junior Elborno spent part of the last summer at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED), a 10-day program that introduces high school students to the world of medicine. After she finished high school, Elborno hopes to attend Northwestern University or the University of Chicago for undergrad and eventually go to medical school.
Hinsdale Central Senior Out of the nearly 3.2 million high school seniors across the country who are expected to graduate this year, Evers was among just 3,000 to be nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program. Hinsdale Central Senior After receiving a letter of appointment from U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), Fredrickson has been accepted into West Point Military Academy starting in the fall.
Hinsdale South Senior Fung is a multi-sport athlete who participates in cross country, basketball and track at Hinsdale South. She also has taken on leadership roles both at school as president of the National Honor Society, and at her church, the Wheaton Chinese Alliance Church, where she is a member of its student leadership team and is in charge of service project ministry. In addition to being a member of both the varsity football and basketball teams at Hinsdale Central, Garvin participates in Breaking Down the Walls. He hopes to play basketball in college; two of his top schools are New York University and Washington University. Hinsdale South Junior Guritz is a member of the football and track teams, and participates in Athletes Committed to Excellence (A.C.E.), Operation Snowball, Peer Leadership Network, and Swag Leadership, a committee of J. Kyle Braid kids that encourages all Hinsdale South students to cheer on their classmates at athletic events. Guritz is also the junior class secretary and is responsible for raising money for his class' prom. Hinsdale Central Junior Johnson performed in Hinsdale Central's "Music of the Night," a concert to benefit the school auditorium, this past October. She is currently preparing to perform in Central's production of Les Miserables this spring. Hinsdale Central Junior Lederhausen plays golf for Hinsdale Central's team, and also plays competitive golf year-round. She is also a leader in the school's Character Counts program, and looks forward to planning fundraising events for Central through the program. Hinsdale South Senior Lueg founded the Future Health Professionals earlier this year with a friend from Hinsdale South. The club promotes awareness in the health field through volunteering, fundraisers, and discussions in the community. Hinsdale South Senior Maday hopes to become a pharmacist after college. The summer before his senior year, he participated in a Career Explorers program at Midwestern University (where he eventually hopes to attend graduate school). The six-week course takes high school students through a pharmacy course at the university and allows them to work as a pharmacy technician at local pharmacies.
Hinsdale South Senior Mihindou and his family moved to the Chicago suburbs from the Republic of Congo during his sophomore year of high school. He only spoke French when he enrolled at Hinsdale South just two weeks after his family moved, but he is now fluent in English and active at school, where he is a member of the varsity soccer team, A.C.E., and the Ping-Pong Club.
Hinsdale South Senior Mikuska is a school representative for Habitat for Humanity and a liaison for DuPage Habitat for Humanity. Through the organization, he has participated in Sleep in a Box, a fundraiser during which participants sleep outside to raise money for Habitat, and helped build a youth house over the summer. Hinsdale Central Senior Owens is a sports lover who has participated in cross country and track since his freshman year, in addition to being a columnist/featured writer for the sports section of the school's newspaper, the Devil's Advocate. As a senior, he was one of five captains for the cross country program. Hinsdale South Class of 2011

The 2011 Hinsdale South graduate started competing in the Scholastic Bowl and Academic Bowl beginning in his sophomore year. His team placed in the top 8 in state his sophomore and junior years, and Sambare was team captain his senior year. Sambare is headed to Harvard in the fall.

Hinsdale Central
Senior
After Schwartz was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome in 2007 and was forced to quit playing basketball, she switched her focus to golf. She played on the girls' golf team all four years at Central, and is also a manager for the girls' basketball team. After volunteering for Special Olympics basketball and participating in Central's adaptive P.E. class as an aide, Schwartz hopes to become an occupational therapist for children with special needs after college. Hinsdale Central Senior Shroyer is a four-year member of Hinsdale Central's varsity soccer team, and is also a member of A.C.E. and Varsity Club. Shroyer has committed to playing soccer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Hinsdale South Senior Verma was a senior co-director for South's Operation Snowball this year, and helped organize a retreat that hosted over 200 students. His experiences with Operation Snowball and as an intern for Obama for America have piqued his interest in public policy and communications, both of which he hopes to study in college. Hinsdale South Sophomore Warren runs indoor and outdoor track for Hinsdale South and plays soccer for the Academy Soccer Club in Schaumberg, in addition to speed skating in Glen Ellyn. This past November, Warren competed in the American Cup II in Cleveland, a qualifying trial for next month's Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Warren won the trial, making her the female representative for Team USA in short track speed skating.
Hinsdale South Senior Zajac was a co-director for Hinsdale South's Operation Snowball club in the 2011-2012 school year, and has been dedicated to the club since her freshman year. Zajac is also a student council representative and works as an after-school nanny; she hopes to continue holding a job while she's enrolled in college next year.
