📰 News we're reading

1. City of Carbondale cuts nonprofit funding, leaving local organizations facing uncertain future (dailyegyptian.com) — Carbondale is slashing its community agency funding starting in Fiscal Year 2027, leaving many local nonprofits scrambling to replace money that once covered most of their budgets. City leaders cite the end of federal ARPA dollars and long-term financial concerns, while groups like Women for Change at the Eurma C. Hayes Center warn programs for vulnerable residents may shrink or disappear without restored city support.

2. Carbondale council approves grocery stores in town, selects marketing firm (bnd.com) — Carbondale’s city council just cleared the way for two new small grocery options, including one at the Eurma Hayes Center, while also hiring Zo Agency to craft a citywide marketing plan funded mostly by a state grant. Council members additionally created new licensing rules and a 3% local tax on hemp-derived THC products, changes that could affect local businesses and shoppers soon.

3. New Software from the Dynamic Eclipse Broadcast Initiative (nasa.gov) — Carbondale’s Unity Point School students played a hands-on role in a national citizen-science project tied to the 2024 total solar eclipse, and their work helped shape new open-source software and training tools now available worldwide. The Dynamic Eclipse Broadcast Initiative has released its eclipse data-processing programs, guides, and checklists online, and continues daily solar observations while planning for the 2027 eclipse.

4. Hospitals across the region receive fall report card (wpsdlocal6.com) — Carbondale residents can now see how SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale scored in the latest Leapfrog safety report, where it received a C alongside other regional facilities.
