Champaign Police, Officer McElwee Earn PETA Award

Officer McElwee rescued a kitten trapped in a storm drain last month.

The Champaign Police Department and Officer McElwee have earned a Compassionate Police Department Award from PETA. On Oct. 24, following several reports by concerned citizens of a trapped kitten in a storm drain, Officer McElwee was able to crawl down into the drain and rescue the 6-week-old kitten. She used toys, treats and catnip purchased by Sgt. Thompson to help earn the kitten’s trust.

Officer McElwee adopted the kitten, who was cleared with a clean bill of health. Naturally, she named the cat Georgie…get IT?
