Joliet Man Strangled Woman with Belt, Left Her Unconscious in Street: Cops

The Joliet man had offered the woman a ride home from an east side bar, police said.

A Joliet man used his belt to strangle a woman during an early morning drive home from an east side bar, police said.

Norman Campbell, 44, allegedly left the 26-year-old woman passed out in the street about five blocks from the Spanish American Club. Campbell had offered the woman a ride home from the Meeker Street bar about 2 a.m. Friday, police said.

The woman woke up and was trying to stagger to her Raynor Avenue home when a male friend happened upon her, police said. Her friend reportedly was accompanying her on the walk when a police officer drove by, noticed the woman was crying and asked her what was going on.

The woman reportedly told the officer that on the way home from the bar, Campbell took of his belt and used it to strangle her until she lost consciousness.

Officers located Campbell parked nearby on Chase Avenue, police said.

Campbell was jailed on a charge of aggravated battery.
