Man Facing Weapon Charge For Allegedly Killing Guy Armed with Steak Knife Must Surrender Guns if Freed on Bail

The Joliet man must turn in all of his guns if he bonds out of jail.

A Joliet man locked up on a gun charge after a fatal shooting must surrender the rest of his firearms if he comes up with the $50,000 he needs to get out of jail.

Dwayne Johnson at first forgot he had more guns than the one he allegedly used to kill 28-year-old Shador Jenkins Friday night. When asked by Will County Judge Cory Lund whether he owned any more firearms, Johnson said, “Um, no,” and then corrected himself and admitted he actually does.

Judge Lund ordered Johnson, 22, to turn the guns in within two days of making bail. Johnson, who holds a state Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, must surrender that within five days of his release.

Jenkins brandished a steak knife and rushed at Johnson, who was sitting in a parked car, police said. Johnson allegedly responded by pulling a gun and shooting Jenkins down.

The killing on Wallace Street was preceded by an altercation between two young women, police said. This reportedly led to Jenkins and another man arguing with Johnson, who was behind the wheel of a Pontiac Bonneville, and two others who were in the car.

Jenkins then allegedly produced the steak knife and ran at the vehicle with his 23-year-old pal joining him in the attack.

The police arrested a 25-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man along with Johnson, but released them without charge.

Police Chief Brian Benton said it appeared the shooting was justified.

Prosecutors are still reviewing Johnson’s case, said Charles B. Pelkie, the spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office. Pelkie would not say if the review might lead to increased or reduced charges.

Less than 48 hours after Jenkins was slain, 22-year-old SjonTre Thompson was shot to death on Englewood Avenue.

Thompson was sitting in a car with a 28-year-old woman when gunmen walked up and opened fire, police said. The woman suffered a bullet wound to her leg.

Just four days that, in almost the exact same spot Thompson was gunned down, a 21-year-old Joliet man was shot in the leg.

No one has been charged in connection with either of the recent shootings on Englewood.
