10-Year-Old Girl Dies Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning; 12-Year-Old In Serious Condition
Authorities on social media referred to carbon monoxide as "the silent killer."
CHICAGO — One child is dead and another is in serious condition after the two were exposed to carbon monoxide in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood, according to authorities.
Emergency personnel responded Monday morning to an apartment in the 3000 block of West Gunnison Street, where they found carbon monoxide levels over 300 parts per million, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said.
The children were taken to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning, Langford said. Ten-year-old Jayrinne Sequeida died, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

“With the cold upon us heating systems will be running full-time,” according to the department. “Please make sure your home is protected with CO alarms as required by law.”

Carbon monoxide levels in homes typically range from 0.5 to 15 parts per million, depending on whether the residence contains a gas stove, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The appliances at the building Monday were shut off and Peoples Gas responded to the scene to investigate, Langford said.
