Apple Store On Chicago River To Open In October

The tech giant announced the opening date for the new riverfront location during a press event Tuesday.

CHICAGO, IL — Apple's newest retail outlet being built along the Chicago River — you know, the glass-walled building with a roof that resembles a MacBook laptop — now has an opening date. Apple Michigan Avenue will open its doors Oct. 20, the tech giant said Tuesday. The announcement was made by Apple's senior vice president of retail, Angela Ahrendts, during a press event in Cupertino, California, that also unveiled the high-end iPhone X, the next-gen iPhone 8 and the Apple Watch Series 3.

"Our team has designed a spectacular pavilion that seamlessly connects the plaza to the promenade as a part of the city's plan to transform the city's riverfront," Ahrendts said about the new building at 401 N. Michigan Ave. It will replace the current downtown location at 679 N. Michigan Ave.

The new $62 million store — excuse me, "town square," as Apple and Ahrendts call their retail outlets, "because they're gathering places for 500,000 million people who visit us every year" — has been under construction since last year. It is one of five new flagship stores "town squares" Apple is opening in major metro areas around the world, including Paris; Washington, D.C.; Milan, Italy; and a redesigned location in New York City. The Chicago outlet caused a stir in June when work crews added the Apple logo to the roof for about an hour. The symbol combined with the roof's curved design and lightweight, metallic material used in yacht hulls gave the appearance of the computer company's iconic laptop.
