CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks hired Chicago Cubs Assistant GM Jeff Greenberg as associate general manager, the team announced Thursday.

Greenberg was a finalist for the Blackhawks' general manager position earlier this year before the team hired Kyle Davidson, who had been serving as interim GM since October. Greenberg will start his new role May 9, according to the team.

The hire rounds out the Blackhawks' executive team for hockey operations, which includes Davidson and Associate GM Norm Maciver.

Davidson, 33, and Greenberg, 36, represent a bit of a youth movement in the Blackhawks' front office. The two bonded over their similar career paths, a shared love of hockey and a common vision for the future of the sport when Greenberg reached out to congratulate Davidson on his appointment as GM, Davidson said.

"I'm excited for our fans to see what he, alongside Norm, can bring as key voices at the table — a table that will continue to grow with other leaders we will add to the team," Davidson said.

Greenberg spent 11 seasons in the Cubs front office, assisting with a rebuild that saw the team break a 108-year drought to win the 2016 World Series. At various times with the Cubs, he also served as the director of pro scouting, director of baseball operations and the assistant to the general manager. Prior to joining the Cubs, Greenberg had front office stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Blackhawks are 28-42-11 and will miss the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons. The team hasn't advanced past the first round since winning the Stanley Cup in 2015.
