Chicago Fire Department Captain Dies Battling Garage Fire After Structure Collapses

Chicago firefighters had extinguished the fire and were starting to salvage when the garage collapsed on the captain.

CHICAGO — A Chicago Fire Department captain died of injuries he suffered fighting a garage fire in Chicago’s West Side Austin neighborhood.

Captain David Meyer died when the structure collapsed on him, fire officials said.

Meyer joined the Chicago Fire Department in 1996 and was assigned to Truck 29. He leaves a wife, three daughters and a son.

“Please keep his family in your thoughts,” CFD spokesman Larry Langford said on X. “This is a sad day for Chicago Fire Department and Chicago.”

The initial call for a garage fire in the 5500 block of West Crystal came in a few minutes after 4 a.m. The fire was struck and firefighters were starting to salvage the garage when the struct collapsed, prompting the mayday alarm.

Meyer was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt described the loss as devastating during a news conference at Stroger Hospital.

Mayor Brandon Johnson also issued a statement, saying the city was grieving for the family and loved ones of the fallen firefighter.

“Captain Meyer was a hero who served the people of our city with courage and honor for more than 28 years. This is a devastating loss for our city,” the mayor continued. “Captain Meyer was not just a firefighter; he was a beloved husband, son, and father of four. Our whole city wraps our arms around the family and loved ones of Captain Meyer during this trying time.”
