Police issued a statement early Thursday morning that did not mention the boy's age, or what threat he posed to the officer who shot him.

"As officers approached the vehicle, an offender fled on foot to the 800 block of N. Cicero, where an officer discharged his weapon, striking the offender," the statement said.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that she is aware the unarmed boy has been shot and has talked to police Supt. David Brown and Civilian Office of Police Accountability administrator Andrea Kersten, and has confidence they'll work together to investigate.

The officer who fired the shots has not been identified.
