Chicago Man Who Shot Trooper Charged In Ex's Murder: Police

Cristobal Santana, 37, was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a special education teacher he had previously dated, police said.

CHICAGO — A 37-year-old Chicago man who police say shot at an Illinois State trooper this week has now been charged with murder in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend, officials announced on Thursday.

Cristobal Santana faces first-degree murder charges out of Sangamon County after he was arrested earlier this week after shooting the trooper. The Illinois State Police said that Santana had been wanted in connection with a recent homicide when he interacted with a trooper and shot him in the leg, police said.

On Thursday, Santana was charged in the fatal shooting of Adrianna Lopez, 37, who police said was fatally shot on Sunday night outside of her apartment in Garfield Ridge. In addition to the murder charge, Santana also faces a criminal charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, officials announced.

Lopez’s family told ABC 7 this week that Santana was waiting for her when she and another male arrived at her apartment on Sunday night around 9:30 p.m. Police said shots were fired from an SUV and that Lopez, 37, was hit more than 10 times.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Lopez died of multiple gunshot wounds after died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The incident with the state trooper took place at 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Lopez had been working as a special education teacher with Chicago Public Schools for three years at Nathan S. Davis Elementary School in Brighton Park.

The state police said the trooper who was shot by Santana remains hospitalized.
