Murder, Arson Charges Filed In Garage Fire That Killed Fire Captain

Investigators determined that trash bin contents were ignited by "human hand" in the fatal West Side garage fire.

CHICAGO — A Chicago man is facing murder and arson charges for his role in a garage fire Wednesday that resulted in the death of Chicago Fire Department Captain David Meyer, Chicago police said.

Charles Green, 44, was due to appear Saturday for a pre-trial detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building, on two counts of murder and aggravated arson/injuring a firefighter or police officer.

Chicago police said Green was arrested Wednesday afternoon within hours of the deadly blaze in the 5400 block of West Potomac Avenue.

Green was identified as a suspect in the garage fire in Chicago’s north Austin neighborhood. The 54-year-old fire captain was doing salvage work in the garage after the blaze was extinguished, and died when the structure collapsed on him. He leaves behind a wife, three daughters and a son.

The Office of Fire Investigation and ATF agents determined that the fire started in a trash bin was caused by “human action.” Fire investigators turned their evidence over to the Chicago police, CFD spokesman Larry Langford said on X.

Services for CFD Capt. David Meyer have taken place.
