Chicago Police Cancel Events After Las Vegas Shooting: 'Today Needs To Be About The Victims'

The department also has been receiving "real-time updates" from Las Vegas police.

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Police Department canceled all of its public events Monday in the wake of the mass shooting Sunday in Las Vegas that has killed at least 50 people and injured more than 400, the worst such incident in U.S. history. Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire Sunday night from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino into the crowd attending a country music festival. Paddock killed himself before police were able to apprehend him.

"Today needs to be about the victims of Las Vegas," Chicago police spokesamn Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement online. "As such we are cancelling CPD public events and stand in support of all involved & @LVMPD."

A press conference had been scheduled to update progress on the department's rollout of body cameras for its officers. The event has not been rescheduled. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Chicago — or your neighborhood. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

The Chicago Police Department also has been "receiving real-time updates" from Las Vegas police to determine if Sunday's attack was connected to possible follow-up actions that could endanger the city.

"[T]here are no links to Chicago and nothing to indicate it's a part of a larger terror act," the department said in an online update.
