Police said they suspect the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol early Thursday morning.

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was hit by a car early Thursday morning while directing traffic in the Loop. Officials told reporters they believe the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol.
The officer was standing in the street on the first block of West Ida B. Wells Drive at around 2:20 a.m. when a Dodge Charger "failed to stop" and hit the officer, according to police. The policeman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
Authorities arrested two males in the Charger and found two handguns inside the vehicle. Police have not responded to request for comment on the age of the driver and passenger and if they had a valid firearm owner identification card.
