Chicago Police Shoot, Wound Man In Apparent Home Invasion: Cops

The man was allegedly holding a woman, 23, at gunpoint, when officers arrived, and she also was wounded in the incident Wednesday.

CHICAGO, IL — A man was shot and wounded by Chicago police during an apparent home invasion Wednesday night on the Near West Side, according to the department. The man, who was not identified, was hit in the lower body during an "armed encounter" with an officer, and he was taken to an area hospital in stable condition, police said. No officers were hurt in the incident.

The shooting happened after officers conducted a well-being check at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the 2000 block of West Washington Boulevard, according to a statement by police. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered it was a home invasion, and the man was allegedly holding a 23-year-old woman at gunpoint, police said.

Police confronted the man, and that's when one of the officers opened fire, hitting the man, according to authorities. The woman also was wounded in the arm in the incident, and police said the shot was fired by the suspect. She was taken to a local hospital in good condition.

In an online update, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators believe the suspect was involved in another home invasion earlier Wednesday at a nearby residence. During that incident, the man was apparently run off by the homeowner, Guglielmi said.

Although the man was not identified by police, the Chicago Tribune reports that he was 19 years old. It's not known if charges have been filed against him in the incident.
