CHICAGO, IL — A Cook County Jail inmate hanged himself in his cell Memorial Day. The Cook County Sheriff's Office said Richard Smith, 23, used the sheets of his bed to kill himself, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to sheriff's office officials, Smith was found in his cell at around 3:45 a.m. Monday, May 28, the report stated. He was being held without bail after being charged with two counts of armed robbery stemming from an incident in 2016 in which he was accused of holding up two women at gun point, the report added.

Smith also had been serving a nine-year sentence for the Indiana Department of Correction. He began serving the sentence in August of last year, the report added.
