In a state where leaders say pandemic policies are allegedly based on "science and data," Chicago teachers union leaders authorized a districtwide walkout that defies both those things and possibly state law.

  • Chicago Public School classes are cancelled today as the Chicago Teacher's Union action that City Hall calls an "illegal strike" enters Day 2. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Wednesday she would not let CTU "take our children hostage". (Patch)
  • The fight to unionize Starbucks has landed in Chicago. Workers at a downtown Starbucks became the first of the chain’s Midwestern locations to sign union cards. (Eater)
  • Ald. Pat Dowell dropped her bid for Illinois Secretary of State and launched a congressional campaign to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, who announced he would not seek a 16th term. (CBS2)
  • Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans rejected Mayor Lori Lightfoot call for a moratorium on pre-trial electronic monitoring for most people charged with violent crimes. "The mayor’s proposal seems to require that defendants facing certain allegations be considered guilty until proven innocent." Evans said. (NBC5)
  • Funeral services for Chicago firefighter MaShawn Plummer, who died fighting a fire on the Northwest Side, are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at House of Hope. “Everybody loved him. Loved him to death,” his neighbor Dolores Johnson said at a memorial service Wednesday. (WGN)
