CHICAGO — For the first time since 1990, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game is set to return to Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs announced Friday the "Mid-Summer Classic" will be played at the 111-year-old baseball stadium on Tuesday, July 13, 2027.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was at the ballpark for the reveal, as were Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts, Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

"The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage," Manfred said in a statement released by the Cubs. "We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago."

The news comes as Cubs fans continue to remember the legacy of Ryne Sandberg, who was an MLB All-Star for 10 straight years while playing for Chicago, and died earlier this week. The Cubs plan to wear blue jerseys without last names and the No. 23 on the back at Wrigley Field on Saturday to honor Sandberg. In addition, Sandberg's number was painted into the grass behind home plate Friday by the grounds crew.

Known affectionately as "Ryno," Sandberg died Monday at the age of 65 after battling metastatic prostate cancer since last year. The second baseman played in MLB for 16 years with the Philadelphia Phillies (1981) and the Cubs (1982-1994, 1996-1997.).

Funeral plans for Sandberg, who had a home in Lake Bluff, have not been announced.
