Cubs Legend Ryne Sandberg Dead At 65: Report
The National Baseball Hall of Famer had been battling metastatic prostate cancer since last year.

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs baseball legend Ryne Sandberg, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, has died. The team announced on social media Monday night that the beloved player, known as "Ryno," passed away at the age of 65.
Sandberg, who had been battling metastatic prostate cancer since last year, played 16 years in MLB. The second baseman played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1981) and the Cubs (1982-1994, 1996-1997.).

Sandberg’s family posted a message on Instagram soon after the announcement.
"To Ryne’s Fans, Friends, and Baseball Family - It is with heavy hearts, we announce that Ryne passed away tonight in the comfort of his home. Ryne was surrounded by his loving wife Margaret, their children, and grandchildren. We thank you for all of the kind words, support, and love during this difficult time. Ryne will forever be in our hearts."

Sandberg was a perennial All-Star, making 10 consecutive appearances in the "Midsummer Classic." He also won nine straight Gold Gloves from 1983 to 1991.
Following his playing career, Sandberg served as a manager in the minor leagues for both the Cubs and Phillies. He managed the big league club for the Phillies from 2013 to 2015.

Sandberg, a native of Spokane, Washington, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. His number, 23, was retired by the Cubs in 2005. A statue of Sandberg was unveiled outside of Wrigley Field on June 23, 2024.
Sandberg and his wife, Margaret, owned a home in Lake Bluff, which they bought for $1.1 million in 2016.

"Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of the historic franchise," Tom Ricketts, Cubs executive chairman, said in a statement on behalf of his family and the Chicago Cubs organization.
