Deadly Flare Found On Illinois Beach, Several Flares Still Missing After Military Drill

CHICAGO, IL — A possibly-dangerous phosphorous flare washed up on the shore of one Chicago beach Monday, and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector of Lake Michigan warned the public about three more unaccounted for flares.

According to the Coast Guard, the flares were used for a joint military exercise with the Air Force offshore in Milwaukee earlier this month. During the exercise, four phosphorous pyrotechnics that were deployed didn't activate in the water.

One silver-shaped cylinder was located on Montrose Beach in north Chicago by a lifeguard. The Coast Guard warned all beach goers to stay clear of it and call 911 if they find one of the flares along the beach.

The pyrotechnics are still considered armed and will produce a red smoke and flame that can reach up to 2,900 degrees Fahrenheit when activated, according to the Coast Guard. The flares
