Mexican Prison is Turning Chicago's Public Enemy No. 1 into a Zombie
El Chapo seeks a plea deal that would let him serve his time in the United States. His Mexican jailers won't let him sleep.
Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has agreed to plead guilty to the charges he faces in the United States if he can serve time in a medium security American prison.
Guzman’s lawyer, Jose Refugio Rodriguez, told Radio Formula of Mexico City he also seeks a “reasonable” sentence for his client, if he is to plead guilty, because of poor treatment in the Altiplano maximum security prison in Mexico where he is currently held, NBC Chicago reported.

Rodriguez said Guzeman is turning into a zombie because guards won’t let him sleep. They wake him up every two hours at night for a roll call.
The prison near Mexico City is the same one Guzeman escaped from in July 2015. That was his second escape from a maximum security prison. He was recaptured on Jan. 8, after an eyebrow-raising interview with actor Sean Penn.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, Guzeman’s third wife, told Radio Formula that Guzeman’s health is suffering from nerves, anxiety and sleep deprivation, CBS News reports.
The Chicago Crime Commission renamed Guzeman as Chicago’s No. 1 Public Enemy days after his escape last summer. He had originally been given the title in 2013 until his capture in 2014, NBC Chicago reports. Al Capone was the first and only other person to have the title.
Some believe Guzeman’s trial may take place in Chicago, where he has been indicted on at least four charges, NBC Chicago reports. The LA Times reports law enforcement officials say Guzeman will go where prosecutors have the strongest evidence, which could be Chicago or New York.
