Elon Musk's Company To Build Chicago-To-O'Hare Transit System

CHICAGO, IL — Elon Musk's Boring Company has been tapped to build and run a high-speed, underground transit system between O'Hare International Airport and Chicago's downtown. The Tesla Motors and Space X wunderkind plans to be in the city Thursday to formally unveil the project, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Musk's proposed transportation system would use special electric pods to ferry travelers to the airport from the Loop in around 12 minutes, the report stated. The autonomous pods will be able to carry up to 16 passengers — including bags — in 30-second intervals through a pair of closed-loop tunnels, and fares would run about $25, the report added.

The project, which was chosen by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration, is expected to cost between $500 million to $1 billion, and Musk's company will foot the entire bill without the aid of tax breaks or other incentives, the report stated. Construction to build the system could start as early as next year and begin operation by 2022, the report added.
