Felon On Electronic Monitoring Leapt From Balcony To Flee Cops

Authorities are searching for the 23-year-old Chicago man who escaped Cook Co. sheriff's deputies earlier this week.

CHICAGO, IL — Authorities are searching for a 23-year-old Chicago man on electronic monitoring who jumped from a one-story apartment balcony to flee Cook County sheriff's deputies Tuesday. Khalil Marbley was on court-ordered electronic monitoring for gun and drug charges, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies went to Marbley's apartment in the 2300 block of South Michigan Avenue just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, in order to relocate or reincarcerate him because the apartment's leaseholder no longer wanted him living there, the sheriff's office said in a release Friday. When the deputies tried to restrain him, Marbley slipped out of his sweater and escaped by jumping from the apartment's balcony to an adjoining parking garage.

Marbley had been placed on electronic monitoring after he was pulled over by Chicago police for traffic violations Jan. 3, the sheriff's office said. A search of his car during the traffic stop found suspected crack cocaine, a digital scale and a loaded .38-caliber revolver, and Marbley, on parole at the time, was charged with six felonies, including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and a possession of a controlled substance.

The following day, Marbley was ordered allowed on electronic monitoring if he posted bail. He then spent around 63 days at the Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation stemming from an earlier conviction. After serving that time, he returned to Cook County Jail and finally was released on monitoring on March 21, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities have issued a warrant for a felony charge of escape for Marbley. He has nine previous convictions, including a 2014 felony conviction for escaping the electronic monitoring program for nine days.
