Freezing Fog Could Affect Motorists Tonight and Tuesday Morning
Be alert for slick and icy spots on the roadways.
The light wind and chilly, moist conditions will continue through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service forecast, and this should set the stage for areas of dense freezing fog late tonight into Tuesday morning. Plan for extra travel time during the Tuesday morning commute.
Scattered snow showers and flurries are then expected late Tuesday and Tuesday evening, with only a dusting to a few tenths of an inch of snow at most where it snows.
Freezing fog occurs when water droplets in the fog become supercooled. They stay in liquid form until they touch a surface upon which they can freeze and turn into ice. Freezing fog is most likely to form at night and can cause ice buildup on roads and dangerous driving conditions, particularly on bridges because there is no ground insulation beneath the roadway. Freezing fog can also cause ice to build up on power lines.
