Fugitive Felon Tries Fleeing A 2nd Time By Leaping Balcony Again

The 23-year-old Chicago man had been on electronic monitoring before escaping Cook Co. sheriff's deputies earlier this month.

CHICAGO, IL — A felon on electronic monitoring who escaped Cook County sheriff's deputies by jumping from a single-story apartment balcony earlier this month was taken into custody this week when he tried to flee authorities a second time by leaping from the same balcony. Khalil Marbley, 23, of Chicago, was arrested Tuesday and charged with escape and resisting a peace officer, the Cook County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Thursday. He was ordered held without bail.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies knocked at the door of an apartment in the 2300 block of South Michigan Avenue at around 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26. It was the same apartment Marbley had been at when he eluded deputies June 12 by jumping from the balcony.

This time, Marbley was seen going out the apartment's patio door before leaping to a nearby parking garage and fleeing deputies like he had earlier, the sheriff's office said. Deputies gave chase as he exited from the northeast corner of the building, and Marbley eventually was taken into custody in a parking lot in the 2200 block of Michigan, according to the sheriff's office.

Marbley had been on court-ordered electronic monitoring for gun and drug charges, and deputies had gone to his apartment in order to relocate or reincarcerate him because the apartment's leaseholder no longer wanted him living there. When the deputies tried to restrain him, Marbley slipped out of his sweater and escaped by jumping from the apartment's balcony to an adjoining parking garage.

Marbley had been placed on electronic monitoring after he was pulled over by Chicago police for traffic violations Jan. 3, the sheriff's office said. A search of his car during the traffic stop found suspected crack cocaine, a digital scale and a loaded .38-caliber revolver, and Marbley, on parole at the time, was charged with six felonies, including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and a possession of a controlled substance.

The following day, Marbley was ordered allowed on electronic monitoring if he posted bail. He then spent around 63 days at the Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation stemming from an earlier conviction. After serving that time, he returned to Cook County Jail and finally was released on monitoring on March 21, the sheriff's office said.

Marbley has nine previous convictions, including a 2014 felony conviction for escaping the electronic monitoring program for nine days.
