Here Are Chicago's 2022 James Beard Award Finalists

Chicago dominates the Great Lakes region "Best Chef" category, with 5 out of 6 nominees hailing from the Windy City.

CHICAGO — Get ready to start making reservations, Chicago foodies.

A veritable smorgasbord of Chicago restaurants — along with their chefs — were named as finalists for the 2022 James Beard Awards.

“Winners will be celebrated at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago,” the James Beard Foundation’s announcement states.

Best Chef: Great Lakes

  • Jason Hammel, Lula Cafe, Chicago
  • Noah Sandoval, Oriole, Chicago
  • John Shields and Karen Urie Shields, Smyth, Chicago
  • Erick Williams, Virtue Restaurant & Bar, Chicago

In the Great Lakes Best Chef competition, five out of six of the finalists work at Chicago eateries, with a lone Detroit chef — Omar Anani of Saffron De Twah — making the cut.
