ICE Fence Taken Down At Broadview Facility: Mayor
Last week, a federal judge had ordered the fence be removed by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
BROADVIEW, IL — Following a recent ruling by a federal judge that a fence surrounding the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility needed to be taken down, Broadview officials say it has been removed.
"The law, including municipal law, applies even to the federal government. This is a victory for the rule of law in a country that is still a democracy," Village of Broadview Mayor Katrin Thompson said. "And it is a victory for Broadview residents and businesses who depend on their municipal government to assure public safety."
The judge had ordered the fence to be taken down by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, and officials said it was removed just before the deadline.

Last month, Thompson said the fence constructed by ICE across Beech Street in front of the facility is illegal and is preventing firefighters access to the area in the case of an emergency. She asked DHS to remove the fence, saying "deliberate defiance of our local law risks a potential tragedy unfolding."
"In effect, you are making war on my community," Thompson said. "And it has to stop."
