Illinois Department of Transportation Pledges $800K to Bridge Inspections

From IDOT: The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today $800,000 in state funds will be used to help the City of Chicago conduct bridge inspections throughout the city. The awarding of the funds, which will be matched by $3.2 million in federal funding, further demonstrates IDOT's commitment to safety by assisting the city in meeting federal requirements for the timely inspections of bridges.

"Safety is always a top priority at IDOT. This commitment will go a long way in giving residents peace of mind that inspections of critical structures in Chicago are meeting federal guidelines," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. "Illinois is the transportation hub of North America and the bridge network in Chicago plays an integral part in that. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the City of Chicago to meet our safety goals and make Illinois an even better place to live, work and do business."

The combined $4 million in state and federal funds will provide the resources necessary for the city to conduct a variety of required inspections on bridges. The inspection results will allow the City of Chicago and IDOT to identify and prioritize the need for future improvements.

Illinois has the third-highest number of bridges of any state with 26,547 statewide.
