DES MOINES, IA — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won the Rebublican Iowa caucuses Monday, according to projections from The Associated Press, NBC News and CNN, beating back attacks from real estate developer Donald Trump and a late surge from Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders were in a virtual dead heat. With a handful of precincts yet to report, Clinton was a head by less than 1 percentage point.

Trump: ‘Knock the Crap’ Out of Hecklers

Donald Trump told a crowd Monday in Iowa that he would pay the legal fees of anybody who beat up tomato-wielding protesters at his rally. At a University of Iowa rally last Tuesday, Trump was the target of a tossed tomato, and a 28-year-old man was arrested for his missed throw. Monday, Trump was warned of a possible repeat incident. So he encouraged his supporters to ”knock the crap out of” anyone seen with the political produce.

Evangelicals Critical for Trump

Donald Trump needs Iowa’s evangelical voters, and he needs to turn boisterous crowds at rallies into warm bodies on caucus night.
