Legal Weed In Illinois: Cops Talk What's Legal, What's Not
Chicago police released a video outlining the state's new recreational cannabis laws, which take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

CHICAGO, IL — Starting Jan. 1, 2020, Illinois will allow the purchase, transportation and consumption of cannabis by adults 21 and older. And police want to make sure residents are prepared — and know what they can and can't do when it comes to legal weed.
The Chicago Police Department released a video Wednesday on Facebook outlining what's legal, what's still illegal and where you can and can't smoke recreational marijuana.
What you're allowed to have:

- Up to 30 grams of cannabis flower
- Up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate (oils, etc.)
- Up to 500 milligrams of cannabis infused product (gummies, brownies, etc.)
Where you can smoke or ingest cannabis products:
- Private residences (but landlords and property owners have the authority to ban cannabis use on their properties)
- Authorized locations licensed for cannabis consumption
Where you cannot smoke or ingest cannabis products:

- Vehicles
- Chicago Transit Authority property
- School grounds
- Restaurants and bars
- Public places (meaning anyplace where somebody can "reasonably expect to be observed" by others) including streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds and front porches
Transporting cannabis:
- When transporting cannabis in a vehicle, it must be in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant package
- It must be "reasonably inaccessible"
What's still illegal:
- Growing cannabis for recreational use (medical cannabis cardholders can grow up to five plants)
- Private sales
