Mom, Dad, 3 Kids Killed as Amtrak Train from Chicago to L.A. Hits Minivan
A 4-year-old girl survived the crash in Colorado. The train was bound for Los Angeles on Sunday.
Trinidad, CO — Five members of a family are dead and a child is in critical condition after an Amtrak train traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles struck a minivan in Colorado on Sunday.
Two adults and three young girls were killed when the Southwest Chief Line train hit the minivan around 10 a.m. Colorado time, reports KUSA in Denver. The accident happened three miles north of Trinidad, Colorado, when the minivan failed to yield for the passing train. None of the 286 passengers on board the train were injured.
The surviving child, a 4-year-old girl, was airlifted to a hospital.

The family has been identified as Steve and Christina Miller, and their daughters Abigail, Kathryn and Elliana. The surviving child (far right in the photo) is named Heidi. She is in stable condition at a Denver hospital, family members told KOAA.
The Millers were on their way to church when their van was struck by the Amtrak train.

The train was stopped for several hours but by evening resumed its journey to California.
