CHICAGO — Fred Rogers told a story on his children's show Mr. Roger's Neighborhood about being scared as a child when he saw something upsetting on the news. "My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,'" he told his audience. Though we're now living through an unprecedented health crisis, at Patch, we want to help you look for the helpers in your own community, so we've launched an initiative to recognize these everyday heroes.

This submission comes from Kim Solomon, who nominated her daughter, Ilana Solomon, a nurse who volunteered to move from her oncology unit at Northwestern Memorial to help fight the pandemic in the COVID-19 unit.

"I am her very lucky mom,"Kim Solomon wrote.

Here's what else she said:

Ilana has always felt that it is truly an honor to take care of someone. She believes that everyone should be treated with dignity & respect no matter what their circumstance might be. She and her fellow nurses have had to learn how to become at times the only life line between patients and their family members.
