Cars Plunge Through Rooftop Parking Lot; Firefighters Battle Massive, Smoky Blaze

VIDEO: Huge fire reported Tuesday morning on West Side. One person rescued from inside.

CHICAGO, IL — Cars dropped through the burning rooftop parking lot of the Buyers Flea Market on the city's West Side Tuesday morning, according to the Chicago Fire Department, and flames tore through the building, sending smoke soaring into the sky.

By Tuesday afternoon, the fire was upgraded to a 4-alarm fire, and a Level 1 Hazmat call. One person was rescued from the building. Chicago Fire Department officials said no one was injured.

Buyers Flea Market, open on weekends and billed as Chicago's largest indoor flea market, is at 4545 W. Division St.

The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., all firefighters were ordered out of the building. The property is a total loss.


At least one auto body shop on the block is involved in the fire, and cars are going up in flames. Firefighters are hosing down the automobiles. Paramedics were seen wheeling people away from the fire on stretchers, but no injuries have been reported.
