CHICAGO — Candidates seeking to oust Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx from office in the March 17 Democratic primary election are calling for her to resign after the Tuesday announcement that special prosecutor Dan Webb obtained an indictment of actor Jussie Smollett on six new charges related to filing false reports that he was the victim of a homophobic hate crime.

Foxx has been harshly criticized for the deal her office cut to drop felony charges against Smollett, who police say faked a hate crime last year, and misleading the public about recusing herself from the case.

“The State’s Attorney’s handling of the Smollett case shook the faith of Cook County residents in the justice system," Foxx challenger, former Chicago Ald. Bob Fioretti said in a statement. "The sheer embarrassment of her incompetence and all that is has cost Cook County in terms of delayed justice, lost respect, and hundreds of thousands of dollars more in taxpayer money spent on a case because of her actions should be enough for her to leave office."
