Portillo's Lemon Cake Returns For Another Summer
The hot dog restaurant chain's dessert will be back starting Tuesday.
Before last year, Portillo's lemon cake had become a dessert of legend that hadn't been served at any of the hot dog restaurant chain's locations for a decade. The cake reached the height of its mythical status last February when a Reddit user put out a $300 "bounty" for anyone who could supply him with a piece of the lemon cake or the recipe to make it.
"If you can find out what actually happened to the lemon cake in the first place I will throw in another $30, but that is a bonus only available if you find the cake," the user, who went by the screen name BigBen2010, wrote on the social media news platform in 2017.
BigBen2010 finally called the restaurant's Oak Brook-based company headquarters, and that move impressed corporate officials so much that they reconsidered the 10-year hiatus. The cake returned last summer, and in the month it was available, more than 900,000 lemon cake slices were sold. The dessert even was mentioned on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

That success has convinced Portillo's to bring back its lemon cake, and it's not waiting another 10 years to do it. The dessert will go on sale at all of its locations starting Tuesday, April 10, and running until Sept. 10. And this time around, customers also will be able ship slices anywhere in the country.

This isn't Portillo's only cake-related event this year. Earlier this month, the restaurant celebrated its 55th birthday by selling its chocolate cake for 55 cents.
