RECALL: 2 Betty Crocker Cake Mixes Recalled Over E. Coli Concern

Attention all can't-bake-from-scratch cake lovers: General Mills recalled some Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mixes over flour worries.

If your cake comes out of a box and not great-grandma's tried-and-true hand-me-down recipe, check your shelves for boxes of Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix. General Mills has recalled some of the Betty Crocker products out of concern the product could be tainted by an E. coli strain known as 0121.

Distributed across the United States, the following mixes are included in Monday's recall:

  • Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix, UPC 1600040987 with Better if Used by Dates of 12APR2017 through 14APR2017; 28MAY2017 through 30MAY2017 and07JUL2017 through 08JUL2017
  • Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix, UPC 1600040997 with Better if Used by Dates of 25MAR2017, 28MAR2017, 28APR2017 and 23MAY2017through 25MAY2017

In June, General Mills issued a nationwide recall of 10 million pounds of bleached and unbleached flour under the Gold Medal, Signature Kitchens and Wondra brands over potential E. coli contamination.

E. coli discovery and more illnesses: Recall of General Mills flour expands well beyond the 10 million pounds announced in the spring.


Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. E. coli 0121 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration, according to information included in the recall. Seniors, the very young and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to the illness.

The outbreak, which has sickened more than three dozen people, has been identified in 20 states.
