Salvation Army Providing Programs For CPS Families During Strike

Salvation Army is providing programming at four local sites to assist CPS families during the Chicago Teachers Strike.

CHICAGO, IL — Several Salvation Army sites are offering programming during school day in an effort to assist Chicago Public School families after the Chicago Teachers Union confirmed Wednesday night they'd be going on strike, and members would not return to their classrooms Thursday.

According to a release from Salvation Army, here are the sites offering programming (and information on each):

  • The Salvation Army Red Shield Center in Englewood: 945 W. 69th St., Chicago, IL 60621. Staff is prepared to accommodate up to 200 children from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering movies, sports (such as dodge ball), and study time. Staff will also serve lunch and two snacks. There won't be a charge to parents.
  • Freedom Center: 825 N. Christiana Ave., Chicago, IL 60651. Staff is prepared to accommodate up to 50 children from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and regular after-school program runs from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. They will serve light breakfast, lunch, snack (as well as dinner for those who stay for after school), at no charge to parents.
  • Chicago Lawn Corps: 5950 S. Spaulding Ave., Chicago, IL 60629: Staff is prepared to accommodate up to 50 children from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, and will serve lunch. There is no charge at this location either.
  • Kroc Center: 1250 W. 119th St., Chicago, IL 60643. Staff is prepared to accommodate up to 200 children from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a $15 daily charge and $50 weekly charge per child. After-school care will be offered from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for an extra $20. They will serve lunch and a snack.
