Chicago Weather: Snow, Cold Temps in the Forecast

Winter not ready to let go. | Video from this weekend's sudden squall. | Wednesday will be warmest day. | There will be rain, too.

We may have felt winter, spring and a touch of summer, even, over the last 48 hours in the Chicago area. Unfortunately, the week ahead brings much of the same, with an emphasis on cold and wet. Monday will feel a bit like winter.

This video of one Saturday snow squall is from the Midway Airport area in Chicago, recorded and posted to YouTube by Adam Lucio of Illinois Storm Chasers.

Numerous snow showers, at times mixed with "soft hail," moved over northern Illinois and through the day on Saturday. These are called "convective" showers similar to the process that forms thunderstorms. They produce brief by heavy snowfall rates. Combined with the weekend's high winds, this produced near whiteout conditions.

The Week Ahead

  • Monday: A 20 percent chance of snow showers or light snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. In the evening, partly cloudy, with a low around 29. North northeast wind 5 to 15 mph.
  • Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. Increasing clouds, with a high near 46. South southeast wind 5 to 15 mph. Rain likely at night. Cloudy, with a low around 42. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
  • Wednesday: Rain likely again. Cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. A chance of rain overnight, before 1 a.m., then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
  • Thursday: A chance of rain and snow before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. In the evening, a slight chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32.
  • Friday: A slight chance of rain and snow before 1 p.m., then a slight chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 43.
