Soft Hail Forces President Onto Expressways for Chicago Visit Today

With clear skies, the presidential motorcade during rush hour could be restricted to Lake Shore Drive. Marine 1 is at Soldier Field.

A soft hail shower passed over the city of Chicago just before noon today, which prevented President Obama from taking the Marine 1 helicopter from O'Hare International Airport into the city. Instead, a presidential motorcade shut down the Kennedy, Stevenson and Dan Ryan expressways for the president, as well as Lake Shore Drive.

The president went to the University of Chicago to discuss his Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland. Joining him is U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

The president is scheduled to depart Chicago from O'Hare at 5:25 p.m. His departure time raises the prospect his motorcade could shut down the expressways during rush hour. The skies, however, have cleared, and it's possible he could be taking Marine 1 from Soldier Field back to the airport.

WBBM reports that Chicago Police officers were released from the president's motorcade detail around 3 p.m., suggesting that a full motorcade to the airport may be avoided.
