Sox Lose / Harold's Chicken / Record Carjackings / Beer Fest

Cheer up this weekend, Chicago! It's been 150 years since the Great Chicago Fire. Things could be worse.

If you, like me, are in a horrible mood because the White Sox are on the verge of being eliminated from the AL Division Series, here's some good news: You can now buy Harold's Chicken's mild sauce — equally beloved by fat guys and Chance the Rapper — in grocery stores.

Check the shelves at your favorite Pete's Fresh Market.

  • Like I was saying, the Sox 9-4 loss to Houston was a Bummer, as in lefty pitcher Aaron Bummer, who gave up the go-ahead run in the 7th inning. Then, the ex-Cubs factor reared its ugly head — in the embodiment of former North Sider Craig Kimbrel — who gave up a homer to seal the Sox fate. The Sox have to win Sunday — or their playoff run is ovah! (Patch)
  • Chicago Firefighter Michael Pickering died from coronavirus complications. The 18-year fire department veteran worked at Engine 29 in the Bridgeport neighborhood. He was 45. (Patch)
  • Carjackings have spiked to the highest level in two decades, Frank Main reports (behind the Sun-Times paywall). The No. 1 most-targeted vehicle model over the past year and a half? Toyota Camry, followed by Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Altima. (CST)
  • A Chicago alderman's brother made a bunch of money renting out spaces Chicago Public School parking lots near Douglas Park during Riot Fest. And Ald. George Cardenas denied knowing his brother cut a deal to pay two schools $1,500 each for the right to charge up to 30 bucks-a-spot during the music festival. (South Side Weekly)
  • If you feel like curling up on the couch after all this bad news, check out WTTW's "Chicago Stories" special on the 150th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. It will remind you that things could be worse. (WTTW)

Neil Steinberg on the Great Chicago Fire: "Not one person in a hundred knows Abraham Lincoln’s widow lived here and endured the calamity, while the one thing many believe they do know about the fire, that it was started by Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicking over a lantern, is a baseless ethnic slur, a scrap of mocking calumny preserved in amber like an insect’s leg, surviving all efforts to dislodge it. Even though universally agreed to be untrue, or at least unsupported by any evidence, the lie endures." (CST)
