Illinois Trooper Took Own Life, Wife Was Slain: Medical Examiner

The off-duty Illinois state trooper and his wife were found in a parked vehicle Monday afternoon.

CHICAGO, IL — A man and woman found fatally shot inside a parked vehicle Monday in Chicago have been identified as 30-year-old Illinois State Trooper Antonio Alvarez and his wife, 31-year-old Amanda Alvarez, state police said. On Tuesday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said the manner of death for Antonio Alvarez was suicide, while his wife's manner of death was homicide.

Police said the circumstances of the shooting were under investigation. Relatives told ABC that Amanda Alvarez, a school teacher, was separated from her husband.

Police said they were found dead in a non-department issued vehicle around 1:25 p.m. in the 11000 block of South Avenue E.

Antonio Alvarez was off duty, according to police. He was a three-year veteran of the Illinois State Police.

Chicago police are handling the death investigation and said both were shot in the head. Officers recovered a gun at the scene.
