Storm Causes Sparking, Explosion and Collapse of Blue Line L Station

CHICAGO, IL — Erin Piotrowski was in a car on Interstate 290 Sunday evening when she, her sister and her daughter saw an incredible site — an L station sparking as a storm passed through Chicago.

The Blue Line station sits in the median of the Eisenhower Expressway. Parts of the UIC Medical Center station's canopy flew onto the highway. The CTA said only the canopy collapsed and crews would work overnight to make the station ready for the Monday morning commute. Train service in that area was suspended.

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning swept through the Chicago area around 7 p.m. Meteorologist Mike Hamernik reports that a wind speed over 73 miles per hours was recorded in Chicago at Michigan Avenue and Roosevelt.
