Suspension Likely For Cubs' Addison Russell: Report

The league has "additional credible information" supporting domestic abuse allegations against the shortstop, The Athletic reports.

CHICAGO — An investigation by Major League Baseball into domestic abuse allegations against Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has uncovered "additional credible information" to support the claims made by the ballplayer's ex-wife, The Athletic reports. Russell was put on administrative leave last week stemming from the accusations, and it's likely he will be suspended and miss the postseason.

Melisa Reidy, Russell's ex-wife, accused a former spouse of domestic abuse and infidelity in a Sept. 19 blog post linked to her Instagram account. She didn't name Russell in the post, but the All-Star infielder had faced similar allegations last year over social media.

Russell denied the claims in 2017, and the couple filed for divorce in late June of that year. MLB officials had opened a domestic violence investigation against Russell at the time, and it has remained open since then.

Some of the new information gathered by the league comes from interviews with Reidy and witnesses following last week's blog post, according to The Athletic. Reidy had originally refused to talk with officials last year.

That additional information — not simply Reidy's blog post — is what led the league to place Russell on seven-day administrative leave, which ends Thursday, Sept. 27, The Athletic reports. That leave could be extended while the investigation continues, but "all signs point to a suspension" for the shortstop, the report added.

Baseball's regular season ends Sunday, and the Cubs have already clinched a playoff berth. Chicago hopes to end the season as National League Central champs, holding off a final, late push by the Milwaukee Brewers.
