Here are the top five stories in Oak Park today:
1. A 30-year-old woman and her 1-year-old son were shot and wounded inside their South Austin apartment Tuesday. The woman’s ex-boyfriend has since been arrested in connection with the incident in the 5200 block of West Congress Parkway. Both mother and son are expected to recover from their injuries. 2. The Trinity High School softball team is heading to game two of the IHSA Class 3A state playoffs. The Blazers beat the crosstown Oak Park and River Forest High School Huskies earlier this week in a 14-12 walk off win. Their next playoff game is June 5 against Resurrection High School at Triton College. (Wednesday Journal)
3. An Oak Park couple is being remembered with a new book compiling their wartime love letters. Kathleen Kincanon Nosek unearthed nearly 100 letters between her parents, Mary and Bernie Kincanon. They were written when Bernie was stationed overseas during World War II. The couple enjoyed 50 years of marriage, and their words are immortalized in their daughter’s newly-published book “My Darling: 99 Love Letters.” (ABC7)
4. The Oak Park-River Forest Chamber of Commerce is collecting donated menstrual products, diapers and cash donations to benefit Oak Park Community Fridge. Six collection boxes are located throughout both villages to help people experiencing poverty. Items will be collected until June 18. (Wednesday Journal)
5. The Oak Park Department of Public Health announced 15 new cases of COVID-19 in the Village since its last report on May 26. More than 28,000 residents have had at least one vaccine dose; 26,098 are considered fully-vaccinated. (Village of Oak Park)
