CHICAGO — Three people, including a state trooper, were hurt in an overnight collision, according to police.

The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. Monday when a squad car responding to a previous crash was parked and blocking a lane on southbound Interstate 94 near 63rd Street in Chicago with emergency lights on, police said. The trooper was sitting in the squad car when it was sideswiped by a gray Jeep, according to police, who said an Illinois Department of Transportation truck was also hit in connection with the crash.

The trooper and the driver of the Jeep were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. The driver of the transportation department vehicle had minor injuries but was not brought to a hospital for treatment, according to police.

The Jeep driver, 22-year-old David C. Walker of Chicago, was cited for violating the Move Over Law as well as driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving with a suspended license, police said.

State police have been affected by 12 crashes in connection with the Move Over Law so far in 2024, leaving five troopers injured, according to the agency. The Move Over Law requires drivers to move when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with hazard lights on, police said, adding violators face an up to $10,000 fine for the first offense and license suspension for up to two years if the violation injures another person.
