United Airlines Flight Diverts to Chicago for Bomb Threat

The Newark-to-Seattle flight landed at O'Hare where police met the plane. The flight resumed around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

CHICAGO, IL — A cross-country United Airlines flight from Newark to Seattle was forced to land at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Wednesday night due to a message that contained a bomb threat. Flight 1696 changed course and landed at 7:15 p.m.

Passengers and crew were escorted off the plane by Chicago Police. Officers were seen on the tarmac searching bags, and police vehicles surrounded the plane. United Airlines described the threat as "non-credible," and the flight resumed its journey to Seattle around 11 p.m.

The FBI is investigating.
