Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling called Rivera “young, vibrant and a hard worker.” Earlier, during her shift on the day of her tragic shooting, the police superintendent said Rivera had taken two guns off the street. Rivera was a tactical officer assigned to the 6th (Gresham) District tactical team.

“She was a young officer with four years on the job,” Snelling said during a news conference hours after the shooting. “She was working extremely hard in the 6th District to get guns off the street to save lives.”

Just before 10 p.m. June 5, Rivera and other officers attempted to stop a man believed to be armed, but he fled into an apartment building in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

When the suspect disappeared into an apartment, police said officers were confronted by another man in the unit with a long gun. Police said the man pointed the rifle at another officer as Rivera ran down the hallway after the man from the street. One shot was fired, striking Rivera in the back.

Chicago police later determined the only weapon discharged during the commotion was another officer, whose gunfire accidentally struck Rivera. Another officer was shot in the wrist.

The man with the rifle, 25-year-old Adrian Rucker, from the Rockford area, has been charged with armed violence, illegal gun possession and possession of fraudulent ID for his alleged role in her death.

Rivera was the mother of an 11-year-old daughter.
