What is open and closed on Presidents Day? The federal holiday began in 1885 as a way to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Since then, it’s become a way to celebrate all presidents, according to History.com. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February.

However, some people know it as a day off from work. Here’s a list of places that will be open or closed for the holiday.

  • Federal offices: closed
  • Post offices: closed
  • UPS and FedEx offices: open
  • Local schools: closed
  • State offices: closed
  • County offices: closed
  • County courthouse: closed
  • Library: closed
  • Local government offices: closed
  • Banks: most are closed; check your local bank schedule; the Federal Reserve is closed and not processing checks on Monday.
  • Metra and CTA: normal weekday service
  • Malls, restaurants: open
  • Stock exchange: NYSE and Nasdaq are closed
