What is open and closed on Presidents Day? The federal holiday began in 1885 as a way to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Since then, it’s become a way to celebrate all presidents, according to History.com. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February.
However, some people know it as a day off from work. Here’s a list of places that will be open or closed for the holiday.
- Federal offices: closed
- Post offices: closed
- UPS and FedEx offices: open
- Local schools: closed
- State offices: closed
- County offices: closed
- County courthouse: closed
- Library: closed
- Local government offices: closed
- Banks: most are closed; check your local bank schedule; the Federal Reserve is closed and not processing checks on Monday.
- Metra and CTA: normal weekday service
- Malls, restaurants: open
- Stock exchange: NYSE and Nasdaq are closed
